I came to Korea in August 2024 — about a year and a half ago. Honestly, Korea was never just a place I wanted to visit. I majored in Korean Language during my undergraduate years in Vietnam, so studying here had been a dream for a long time. When I was awarded the Global Korea Scholarship in 2024, it felt less like luck and more like something I'd been building toward for years. And it's been even better than I imagined.

Honestly, yes — I won't deny it. Even with TOPIK Level 6, Korean is still a foreign language for me, so phone conversations can be challenging at times since I can't rely on visual cues. I sometimes had to ask the other person to repeat or rephrase. But I stayed calm, focused on context, and made sure to clarify anything I wasn't sure about.

Even though I know I'm not perfect, I approached the interview with confidence. I believe I was able to clearly convey my thoughts and communicate my strengths effectively — and perhaps that's one of the reasons I got the job. I also prepared a well-structured self-introduction in Korean beforehand, which helped me feel grounded and composed throughout the interview.

One question that really stuck with me was when they asked about my future visa plans. I hadn't expected that question, and it made me realize just how significant visa status is for foreign applicants. Since companies have to go through considerable administrative processes to hire and sponsor foreign workers, it's naturally a concern for them. It was a reminder that as an international applicant, your visa situation is always part of the equation.

I think it was the combination — not any single thing. TOPIK Level 6, a 980 TOEIC, internship experience in a Korean company, and a self-introduction that clearly articulated my goals and what I could offer, not just my résumé in sentence form. But honestly? Confidence played as big a role as credentials. In the interview I showed genuine enthusiasm and a clear willingness to learn. When you're early in your career, attitude is a skill too.

무엇보다 연습이 중요했습니다. 세 가지 언어로 흔히 나오는 면접 질문들을 반복해서 자연스럽게, 막히지 않고 대답할 수 있을 때까지 연습했어요. 답변 구조도 꼼꼼하게 짰습니다. 명확한 요점, 뒷받침하는 예시, 그리고 깔끔한 마무리를 갖추도록 노력했죠. 그래야 긴장되더라도 구조를 잘 유지할 수 있었으니까요. 면접에서 가장 완벽하게 통제할 수 있는 건 준비뿐이니, 최대한 통제하려고 노력했습니다.

Practice, mostly. I drilled common interview questions in all three languages until I could answer naturally, without freezing. I also worked on structuring my answers - making sure I had a clear point, a supporting example, and a clean ending - so that even when nerves hit, the structure carried me through. Preparation is the only thing you can fully control going into an interview, so I controlled it as much as I could.

There are genuinely a lot of opportunities for foreigners in Korea, but you have to be proactive. Build your skills early — especially in language, since strong Korean proficiency is a real differentiator. Stay active on platforms like KoMate, because you never know when the right opportunity will appear. And don't wait until graduation to start your job search. Try to get internship or part-time experience as early as possible — hands-on experience is something no résumé tip can replace.

정말 힘들었어요. 솔직히 말해서, 수백 개의 구인 공고에 이력서를 보냈던 기억이 나요. 특히 D-2 비자 소지자였을 때는 더 어려웠죠. 많은 회사들이 그 비자 소지자를 채용하려 하지 않아서 거절당하는 일이 잦았거든요. 하지만 거절당할 때마다 무언가를 배웠고, 결국 포기하지 않고 계속 노력한 보람을 느꼈습니다.

It was genuinely tough — I won't sugarcoat it. I remember sending my CV to hundreds of job postings, which was especially difficult when I was still on a D-2 visa. Many companies weren't open to hiring someone on that status, so rejections were frequent. But every rejection taught me something, and eventually persistence paid off.

네. 졸업 후에는 좀 더 유연하게 구직 활동을 이어가기 위해 D-10 구직 비자로 전환할 계획입니다. 장기적으로는 한국에서 더 안정적인 삶을 누리고 더 많은 기회를 얻을 수 있도록 F-2 영주권 비자를 취득하고 싶습니다.

Yes. After graduating, I'm planning to transition to a D-10 job-seeker visa to continue my job search with more flexibility. In the longer term, I'd like to work toward an F-2 residency visa, which would give me greater stability and open up more opportunities in Korea.
